Historians variously contend that Lao Tzu is a synthesis of multiple historical figures, that he is a mythical figure, or that he actually lived in the 4th century BC, concurrent with the Hundred Schools of Thought and Warring States Period. Lao Tzu worked most of his life in the public service, and retired later to the West, without leaving any trace. He is the archetype of the Taoist Sage. His preaching insisted on keeping a low profile and practicing non doing and emptiness. Lao Tzu is an exciting character even today - mostly because his wisdom. Lao Tzu believed that human life, like everything else in the universe, is constantly influenced by outside forces. He believed “simplicity” to be the key to truth and freedom. Lao Tzu encouraged his followers to observe, and seek to understand the laws of nature; to develop intuition and build up personal power; and to use that power to lead life with love, and without force.
